Another Mugumo tree believed to be of age 80-years-old fell at Kariko village in Kandara, Murang’a County on Tuesday, May 15 2018, following heavy rainfall on the region.

As per area resident James Maina who spoke to exposeke.com, the tree fell at around 7.45am with a loud bang, sending the village in panic as villagers thought it was an explosion.

Maina explained that the falling of the tree drew a curious crowd which rushed to the home to witness the rare occurrence.

He added the tree fell facing Mt Kenya, an indication that its falling had a symbolic importance.

According to Kikuyu tradition, Mugumo (fig) trees are considered sacred and are never used for timber or firewood and instead, are left to rot should they fall down.

Anyone who attempts to use the tree for any purposes is believed to be visited with calamities.

“We made a communication to the family where the tree fell together with the locals not to even pluck a twig from the tree and leave it as it is. We have also summoned elders to come and witness,” he said.

Another elder from Kigumo who identified himself only as Kinuthia, told exposeke.com that tradition requires that if it is established burnt offerings were conducted under the tree in the past, elders would assemble there and conduct a cleansing ceremony as it is believed a calamity of a big magnitude might hit the community.

Another Mugumo tree fell about one and a half months ago at Kiaguthu village in Kiharu in the same county, and the following day, former veteran politician Kenneth Matiba died at the Karen Hospital in Nairobi while undergoing treatment.

The falling of the tree was associated to his death by the locals.
