Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya was on Monday, January 14, the elected new chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG).

The governor took over the mantle from his Turkana counterpart Josphat Nanok who was also in the race alongside Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Salim Mvurya (Kwale), Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu) and Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu).

Exposeke.com also confirmed Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria was picked as Oparanya’s deputy during the CoG’s Executive Election held at Movenpick Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi, effectively replacing Governor Waiguru.

According to the CoG, all sitting governors are qualified to vie for the top position except those who have served two terms of one year each.

The outgoing chair, Nanok, who took over from former Meru Governor Peter Munya, was exploring to serve a second term but lost in the hotly contested Monday elections.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has congratulated the incoming CoG boss who is one of the party’s deputy leaders, the other being Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.

“We congratulate our Deputy Party Leader H.E. Governor Wycliffe Oparanya on his election as chairman of Council of Governors. We are confident that he will discharge his duties diligently and push for the strengthening of Devolution which is one of our pillars,” the party tweeted.

Kakamega, which played host to 2018 Devolution Conference, is seen as one of the counties that have benefited the most under the constitutional dispensation of devolved governments as manifested by the improved infrastructure, health, hospitality and education sectors in the county.

Despite challenges, the county’s chief, Oparanya, has in the recent past earned himself accolades both from peers and the residents of Kakamega for the accomplishments he has made, thanks to devolution.

Exposeke.com understand these achievements and other factors significantly improved the governor’s chances of winning in the CoG chairmanship race.
