List of the most useless courses in Kenyan Universities

The Commission for University Education is tasked with monitoring university programmes and making sure that Kenyan universities give quality education that meets the global standards. The commission’s base values are professionalism, teamwork, integrity, accountability, and responsiveness regarding university education. Lately, the commission gave out the list of universities offering “useless” courses.

The report registered that some universities award courses which are not officially recognised by the universities’ respective senates. CUE further established that a total of 133 university programmes with an overall enrolment size of 10,000 slots were ‘useless’. Some learning institutions offered duplicate programmes while others offered programmes which were above their potential. Students who enrolled for and studied the courses labelled ‘useless’ by the CUE may have a difficult time in the job market because potential employers won’t recognise their certificates.

Universities and the number of useless courses according to CUE

The CUE audit report revealed that both public and private universities were culprits as institutions of higher learning out to milk desperate students who want to enrol. Some universities are notorious for having different course titles midstream. There are also rampant irregularities in universities concerning the courses offered, with some universities enrolling way too many students even with few lecturers and other teaching resources.

Tom Mboya University College had the highest number of unapproved courses, with the number of these programmes holding at 25. The following list comprises the names of universities mentioned and the number of useless courses that are offered.
