All Kenyans were encouraged to plant trees on the day with this year’s theme being ‘Panda Mti, Penda Kenya (Plant trees, love Kenya)’.
“We encourage every Kenyan, and those who live within our borders, to plant a tree or trees wherever they will be on that day,” the statement read in part.
On Monday, Deputy President William Ruto received a report from a task-force that was to come up with a plan to restore the country’s depleted forest cover.
The task-force led by Green Belt Movement CEO Marion Wakanyi Kamau placed the blame on the Kenya Forests Service (KFS) which was termed as corrupt and incompetent.
“These have made it impossible for KFS to tame the destruction of the environment,” Ms Kamau noted in a brief to Ruto.
Ruto promised that action would be taken to ensure the country met its target of 10 percent forest cover by 2030.
“I commit to you that the report’s recommendations will be implemented. I appreciate the fact that some decisions therein would be pretty difficult to make but they will have to be done,” he affirmed. For Verified Information and News, look for EXPOSEKE.com, hit the bell button to subscribe for updates, to reach our support team, contact us here
